The quick version: we're a book publisher, not a data business. The only details you actively hand us are what you type into our newsletter sign-up. Behind the scenes we use a few standard analytics and advertising tools that rely on cookies, which you can control or switch off. We don't sell your personal information, and wherever you live, you can ask us to show you, correct, or delete what we hold. The full story is below.

Who we are

This Privacy Policy explains how Portable Press ("we", "us", or "our") handles information about you when you visit this website, read our blog, or join our mailing list. It applies to this site and any page that links to this policy. If you have a question about anything here, the fastest way to reach a person is through our contact page, or by emailing us at privacy@pressnportable.com.

The information we collect

We keep this deliberately small. It falls into three groups.

What you give us

When you sign up for our mailing list, we ask for your first name, email address, and country, and we record that you ticked the box agreeing to receive our emails. If you write to us through the contact page or by email, we'll have whatever you choose to tell us, plus your email address so we can reply.

What we collect automatically

Like almost every website, our servers and tools log basic technical details when you visit: your IP address, your browser and device type, the pages you look at, roughly where in the world you're connecting from, and the site that referred you. This is used to keep the site secure, understand what's popular, and fix things that break.

Anti-spam checks

Our sign-up form is protected by Google reCAPTCHA, which helps us tell real readers from bots. Its use is governed by Google's own Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies are small files stored by your browser. We use a handful of categories:

• Essential ones that make the site work and remember your cookie choices.
• Analytics, through Google Analytics (loaded via Google Tag Manager), which tell us in aggregate how the site is used so we can improve it.
• Advertising and social, such as the Meta (Facebook) pixel, which help us understand whether our posts and promotions reach the right readers.

If you're visiting from the EU or UK, you'll see a consent banner and nothing non-essential loads until you agree. Anywhere in the world, you can manage or block cookies through your browser settings, opt out of Google Analytics with Google's browser add-on, and adjust Meta's ad preferences inside your Facebook or Instagram account. Blocking some cookies may mean parts of the site behave differently.

How we use your information

We use what we collect to send you the newsletter and updates you asked for, to reply when you contact us, to run and secure the website, to understand which books and articles readers enjoy, and to promote our titles to the people most likely to be interested. We don't use your details to make automated decisions that have a legal or similarly significant effect on you.

When we share information — and when we don't

We do not sell your personal information. We do share limited information in a few ordinary situations: with the service providers who run things on our behalf (email delivery, hosting, analytics and advertising platforms), who may only use it to provide their service to us; with other imprints in our publishing group where it's relevant; and where the law requires it, or to protect the rights and safety of our readers, our staff, or the public. If our business is ever sold or merged, information may pass to the new owner as part of that deal.

Our legal grounds (for EU and UK readers)

Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, we rely on your consent for the newsletter and any non-essential cookies (which you can withdraw at any time); on our legitimate interests in running a secure, well-understood website and marketing our own books; and on legal obligation where we're required to keep or disclose certain records.

Your rights, wherever you are

You have real control over your information no matter where you live, and we apply these rights globally:

• You can ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete it.
• You can ask us to pause or limit how we use it, or object to a particular use.
• You can ask for your details in a portable format to take elsewhere.
• You can unsubscribe from marketing at any time using the link in any email, and withdraw consent you've previously given.

These mirror the rights set out in the EU and UK GDPR, California's CCPA and CPRA, Canada's PIPEDA, Brazil's LGPD, Australia's Privacy Act, and comparable laws elsewhere. A specific note for California residents: the CCPA gives you the right to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information and to be free from discrimination for exercising your rights — and since we don't sell your information, there's nothing to opt out of on that front. To exercise anything above, email privacy@portablepress.com and we'll respond within the timeframe your local law sets (a month under the GDPR), free of charge unless a request is clearly excessive.

International transfers

We're based in the United States and our site is hosted there, so if you're visiting from elsewhere your information will be transferred to and processed in the US, where privacy laws may differ from your own. Where the law requires it, we rely on recognised safeguards for those transfers and keep the amount of data involved to a minimum.

Children

This site is meant for a general audience and isn't directed at children under 16. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 16, and if we learn we have, we'll delete it. If you're a parent or guardian and believe your child has sent us something, please contact us and we'll put it right.

How long we keep it

We hold your information only as long as we need it for the purpose we collected it — for newsletter details, that's until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove you; for analytics and logs, only for a limited period. After that it's deleted or anonymised, unless the law requires us to keep it longer.

Keeping information safe

We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information, and we ask the providers who work for us to do the same. No website or transmission over the internet is ever completely secure, though, so we can't promise perfect protection.

Links to other sites

Our pages link out to book retailers, our sister imprints, and social platforms. Once you follow one of those links you're on someone else's site, under their privacy policy rather than ours, so it's worth a look before you share anything with them.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as our practices, technology, or the law change. When we do, we'll revise the date at the top, and we'll flag anything significant rather than slipping it past you.
